Toyota’s Investment a Plus for Economic Expansion in San Antonio
September 26, 2019
The $391 million investment into Toyota’s San Antonio manufacturing plant is expected to enhance economic expansion in San Antonio, and the plant’s long-term performance and competitiveness.
Although no additional jobs are tied to the investment, one of Toyota’s suppliers will see a boost in employment within the coming years. Aisin AW, a Japanese corporation that produces automatic transmissions for Toyota’s vehicles will spend $400 million on a new production site in the suburb city of Cibolo. Aisin AW’s investment will add 900 new jobs by 2023 with production expected to start by 2021.
Estimates for the total economic impact of Toyota’s investment could exceed $10 billion and create more than 40,000 jobs over the next decade.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg called the investment a “huge win” for the Alamo City.
“This is exactly the kind of project our city has strategically been preparing for — it shows we’re a competitive region ready for big investment from large manufacturers,” Nirenberg said.
Large companies such as Amazon, Carrier, Navistar, HEB and Toyota continue to invest in economic expansion in San Antonio industrial zoning markets. Expansion from other corporations is expected and land such as IRC’s 148 acre listing, is quickly turning into a prime investment opportunity. Located directly across from the Toyota Manufacturing Plant and inside a qualified opportunity zone, the 148 acres is ripe for industrial players.
